Daycare spots for DFG-funded research groups

A contingent of up to 30% of the daycare spots of the university day care centers is allocated to parents who are employed by a DFG-funded research network or by an institution of the Excellence Initiative.

In exchange, the research network/institution of the Excellence Initiative assumes part of the monthly operating costs of the day care spot:

  • 100 EUR each month for a full-day spot
  • 75 EUR each month for a a spot until 2.30 p.m.
  • 50 EUR each month for a half-day spot

Generally, DFG-funded research networks have funds available for the promotion of gender equality. These can be used to cover the above mentioned payments. These payments do not reduce the parental fee.

Necessary steps to obtain a contingent spot:

  1. In case of interest, parents as well as research or excellence institutions can find a form, which has to be filled out and signed by the coordinator of the research network or the contact person of the excellence institution. In this way, the research association or the institution of excellence confirms that a cooperation agreement on a contingent spot can be concluded.
  2. The filled out and signed form must be submitted to the Familienservice by e-mail ( or by mail.
  3. In addition, parents must go through the regular registration process via the online portal of the City of Freiburg and register their child for a daycare spot in one (or several) of the university daycare centers.
  4. As soon as we can offer the family a suitable contingent spot, a cooperation agreement between the research association or the institution of excellence and the Familienservice will be concluded in addition to the childcare contract with the parents.
